Just three days away from kickoff against California, the University of Hawaii football team was underwater down under.
KHON2’s Sam Spangler followed the team in Australia.
It was a soggy and cold Wednesday as temperatures lingered in the mid-50s for most of the day.
However, the Rainbow Warriors made the most of their free time, taking a field trip to Taronga Zoo in Sydney, about an hour away from the team’s hotel.
After a few hours of petting koalas and taking pictures with kangaroos, the ‘Bows hit the practice field to get game-ready for the Golden Bears, and it was a messy one.
Covered in mud Head Coach Nick Rolovich expressed pride in how his team handled and welcomed the less than favorable conditions.
“Very spirited practice. I don’t think I’ve had a practice like this in a long time but the boys did good. They fought through it.” said Rolovich.
Senior Wide Receiver Marcus Kemp added “I don’t know if we’ll play in anything like this but it’s always better to prepare for the worse so it’s definitely good to get into a situation like this because in Hawaii it’s nothing like this. So it’s definitely good for us to have an experience like this.”
Tomorrow, UH will hit the practice field at noon before other team activities as the Rainbow Warriors get closer to kickoff.
The ‘Bows and Bears will start the college football season on Friday at 4 p.m. HST on ESPN.
