Next week, Hawaii’s newest Macy’s opens in Kapolei.
The 103,000-square-foot store is the first retailer to open in the new Ka Makana Alii shopping center.
More than 150 stores will open there this fall along Kapolei Parkway.
Macy’s will open Sept. 1, with a grand opening celebration set for Sept. 30.
The store employs approximately 150 associates, and the store’s manager, Ray Vandevender, says more will likely be hired for the holiday season.
“I think we are going to do really well out here,” he said. “Talking from a lot of the community members out here, they are definitely excited about the store opening up and can’t wait to shop in this building.”
Store officials say the store will cater to island residents with emphasis on active lifestyle and island apparel, in addition to popular and exclusive brands.
“You’ll see a much more casual lifestyle in both the attitude of product, the weight of product, and the offerings — here it is, almost October and you won’t see a boot on our floor,” said Deena Nichols, Macy’s district vice president of Hawaii and Guam. “You’ll see lots of shorts and tank tops and weight-appropriate products for this market, and that’s not easy to do in retail.”
We asked Nichols about the possibility of other Macy’s stores closing in Hawaii. She said she hasn’t seen a list, but generally, Macy’s stores in Hawaii perform very well.
Macy’s is just one of the stores opening first at Ka Makana Alii.
The 1.4-million-square-foot mall will include retailers and businesses like Da Cove, Magnolia Ice Cream, and Consolidated Theatres.
