Frantic moments Wednesday after a five-year-old went missing from school in West Oahu.
It happened shortly after noon at Waianae Elementary.
According to the Hawaii Department of Education, a parent made arrangements to pick up the kindergartner and his older sibling from school. Officials say both students were released to the main office at around noon.
We’re told the kindergartner mistakenly left campus, thinking they were supposed to walk home.
School staff began searching the campus and surrounding neighborhood, and police were notified.
After about 45 minutes, staff found the five-year-old safe. Police say he was about a mile away from the school on Ala Walua Street. It’s still not clear how he got there.
Police say someone flagged down an officer after seeing the boy, and he was reunited with his family.
The department says it will review the incident to determine if and what changes are needed. Officials say special attention will be given to kindergartners and first graders to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
