Another talented musician of the notable Cruz family has died.
Guy Cruz, 49, passed away from heart disease Friday morning at the Hilo hospice Pohai Malama. According to a family member, he lived in Puna and had been ill for at least a year.
Cruz was a staple on the local music scene for years, gigging in Honolulu clubs on a regular basis.
More than 16 years ago, Cruz had his highest profile as a musician when he joined then up-and-coming ukulele whiz Jake Shimabukuro and percussionist Lopaka Colón (son of famed percussionist Augie Colón) to become a member of the band Colón.
Amy Hanaialii Gilliom posted on her Facebook page early Friday morning: “Ahhhh with an even heavier heart my cousin Guy Cruz passed away early this morning. Guy is brother to Ernie that passed away a couple of days ago. What a blow to my Aunty Puna and all Cruz Ohana. Guy was extremely talented as well. Rest with Akua Guy.”
Guy Cruz’s death comes just days after the death of his brother, Ernie Cruz Jr.
The 56-year-old died after he was pulled from waters off Sandy Beach Tuesday afternoon.
