Teams complete Na Wahine O Ke Kai canoe race without a hitch

After being cancelled last year, and safety concerns because of boat propellers this year, the 38th annual Na Wahine O Ke Kai went off without a hitch on Sunday.

The women’s Molokai-to-Oahu canoe race started at Hale O Lono in the morning, with the first finishers coming into Waikiki, in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village about six hours later.

Team Bradley won for the 9th-time in 11 events, completing the 41-mile stretch in 6 hours and 5 minutes.

Oahu’s Outrigger Canoe Club finished second 6 minutes back, or 4 minutes ahead of Hui Nalu.

Last weekend, a woman in the Maui-to-Molokai Pailolo Challenge canoe race was critically injured by a boat propeller.

Her daughter paddled in Sunday’s race with an escort boat that had propeller guards, as did some other crews in the wake of last week’s accident.
