Crews remove tree in Thomas Square due to extensive decay

City crews cut down a royal poinciana tree in Thomas Square Tuesday.

The tree was already slated for removal as part of the Thomas Square Master Plan, however experts discovered decay within the tree’s base had advanced at a much faster rate than expected.

The city decided to remove it immediately out of an abundance of caution for public safety.

Work on the Thomas Square Master Plan is expected to begin later this year.
