Hawaiian Electric has pinpointed the cause of a power outage that left thousands along the Waianae coast and in Wahiawa in the dark for more than six hours Tuesday night.
HECO says the outage began at around 6:40 p.m., and affected 5,440 customers in Nanakuli, Waianae, Makaha, and in Wahiawa, which includes Schofield Barracks and Wheeler Army Airfield.
Power was initially restored by 9:30 p.m., but only for about 10 minutes before it went out again. Work was completed and power restored at 1 a.m.
HECO says several power lines had too much slack in them. They made contact with other lines and caused a short circuit.
There was also a police investigation in the area, so it took longer for crews to get to the source of the problem.
