BJ Penn’s return from retirement has suffered another blow, MMAjunkie’s John Morgan reported Tuesday afternoon.
The Hilo native was slated to face UFC featherweight 4th-ranked Ricardo Lamas to headline UFC Fight Night 97 in Manila on October 15, but Morgan reports an undisclosed injury will force Penn to withdraw from the bout.
Penn was originally slated to make his return from a 2014 retirement at UFC 199 in May, but was suspended from the competition for illegal out of competition IV use.
Just as a training injury took away a bout for Hawaii UFC fans Tuesday, an opening gave new life.
Before the Penn news broke in the afternoon, the UFC announced that Honolulu’s UFC bantamweight Russel Doane has agreed to take on Mirsad Bektic on short notice at UFC 204 this weekend.
Coming off of three straight defeats, the latest being a first round submission loss in July, Doane has five days notice to face the undefeated (10-0) Bektic in Manchester, England.
The bout is scheduled as the beginning of the main card, which is only available on pay-per-view, beginning at 4 p.m. HST.
