On Saturday, October 8, at about 10:26 a.m., a four-vehicle crash occurred on the Haleakala Highway bypass at Makani Road in Makawao.

A silver Nissan sedan was traveling up the highway when it disregarded the red traffic signal at the intersection of Makani Road and broad-sided a white Toyota truck that was executing a left turn down onto the highway from Makani Road.

After colliding with the Toyota, the Nissan crossed the centerline into the on-coming lane of travel and collided with another vehicle stopped in traffic. That vehicle collided into another vehicle stopped behind it.

The two occupants of the Toyota died at the scene. The passenger of the Toyota was identified as Traci Winegarner, 57, of Pukalani. She was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident. The driver of the Toyota was identified Monday as Debra Wylie, 63, of Pukalani. She was wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident.

The operator of the Nissan sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

The occupants of the other two vehicles also sustained non-life threatening injuries. A total of five other people were transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

The involvement of speed is suspected in the crash. The involvement of drugs and alcohol are under investigation.

This is Maui County’s 14th and 15th traffic fatality in 2016 as compared to 18 at this time last year.
