Cover2 Power Polls: Konawaena reclaims D-II number-one spot

Konawaena Wildcats

It’s been six weeks since Konawaena was last atop the Cover2/GEICO Division II Power Poll, but now they return as the No. 1 team in Hawaii as the regular season wraps up.

The Wildcats (6-1) are coming off a solid 35-12 victory over cross-island BIIF D-II rival Kamehameha-Hawaii (6-2), extending their win-stream to five games. Konawaena will finish out their regular season Friday night against Kea’au (2-4).

Falling from the top spot are the Warriors of Kapa’a (6-1) after being dropped 20-17 by Kauai (1-6) last Saturday night. The Red Raiders earned their first win of the season while snapping Kapa’a’s five-game shutout streak.

This marks the second consecutive week a previously unbeaten team has received their first loss of the season, leaving no remaining undefeated teams in the 808 state.

With Kapa’a taking the No. 3 spot, the previously third-ranked Pearl City Chargers (5-2) drop out of the top five after falling 20-17 to Kaimuki (5-3).

The Chargers, however, can lock up the No. 1 seed for the OIA D-II playoffs with a win over Waialua (4-2) in the last weekend of the regular season. But if the Bulldogs prevail, Pearl City will drop to the No. 4 seed and Waipahu (7-1) will take the top spot.

Saint Francis (4-2) moves up to No. 2 and Damien (5-2) moves up to No. 4.

In the latest Cover2/GEICO Division I Power Poll, Hilo (6-1) makes their debut in the latest rankings at the No. 10 spot, replacing Kamehameha (3-5).

The rest of the top 10 remains intact with Kahuku (7-1) still holding their position in the No. 1 slot.

Expect movement in next week’s power poll as the OIA D-I playoffs continue this weekend with No. 7 Mililani (5-2) taking on No. 5 Waianae (7-2), and No. 9 Campbell (5-3) facing No. 8 Farrington (6-2).

All teams remaining in the OIA Playoffs have already secured spots in a state tournament, but winners of this weekend’s games will land a birth in the new Open Division state tournament.
