The Hawaii Fire Department is investigating what sparked two brush fires that briefly closed part of Route 190 Thursday afternoon.

Officials say the fires, which sparked at around 2:43 p.m., were suspicious in nature.

The first was located near the intersection of Route 190 and Daniel K Inouye Highway. It scorched up to 1,500 square feet and was extinguished by 4:30 p.m.

A larger fire sparked about three miles away and burned up to 1.5 acres. It was extinguished at 6 p.m.

Route 190 was previously shut down from Kaiminani Drive to Daniel K. Inouye Highway and Waikoloa Village Road. Viewer video shows flames coming dangerously close to the roadway.

No one was hurt, and the fires did not damage any structures.
