Elderly man dies from injuries caused by house fire in Waipahu


The elderly man who was transported to a hospital in serious condition after escaping a house fire in Waipahu Friday morning died Sunday.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office identified him as Manuel Baptista, 88, of Waipahu. Details on the cause and manner of death have not been made available.

Honolulu firefighters responded to a two-alarm building fire at 94-378 Kipou Street Friday at 5:56 a.m. Smoke and flames were emanating from the side of the building.

Baptista, the lone occupant, was still in the house at the time. He was located, brought out, treated by EMS personnel for possible smoke inhalation and shortness of breath, and then transferred to the hospital.

The fire was brought under control by 6:12 a.m. and fully extinguished by 6:24 a.m.

Damage estimates are $50,000 to the structure and $10,000 to contents. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
