Teshima’s Restaurant in Honalo on Hawaii Island has been a staple in the community for nearly 90 years.
According to Noelani Teshima Greene and Rayne Izumi-Baltero, their great grandmother, affectionately known as Grandma Teshima, opened a general store in 1929. Then, during WWII, Grandma Teshima opened a “U” shaped saimin stand adjacent to the general store to accommodate the movie crowd. Along with the food service came the bar.
In 1957, the general store and bar evolved into the restaurant that stands today.
The restaurant is known for its delicious shrimp tempura, but serves all kinds of local style Japanese food. Izumi-Baltero says the restaurant’s success is due to the hard work and dedication of the Teshima family as well as its devoted employees and customers.
Teshima’s Restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at 79-7251 Mamalahoa Hwy. Call (808) 322-9140 for more information.
