Aloha Stadium steps up security at UH homecoming game in wake of tailgating concerns

The University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors homecoming game is underway at Aloha Stadium ending the first day of tailgating under a new rule and increased security.

Safety concerns were raised after the last home game. Witnesses showed KHON2 photos of tailgaters getting medical attention after drinking too much alcohol near the area where the UH student group Manoa Maniacs was holding its promotional event.

This week, officials increased security around Aloha Stadium and UH says Manoa Maniacs’ tent will be inside the stadium instead of outside.

“Yeah, I think it has to be a little bit tighter, but I mean, they’re having fun, but you shouldn’t take it too much like too overboard, you can just chill you know,” said UH Manoa student Melanie Chun.

UH says it also launched a health campaign targeting students through email and social media, warning them about the dangers of binge drinking.

“They need adult supervision big time. Yes, we gotta make sure we take care of that, absolutely,” said long-time tailgater Donald Kaanapu.
