Hawaii’s voyaging canoe Hokulea on Saturday arrived in Newport News, Virginia, in the Chesapeake Bay, where she’ll be staying a while.

She left Annapolis, Maryland, on Friday after a brief stay and a visit from local boy and winning head coach of the Naval Academy football team Ken Niumatalolo.

“Thank you so much for all that you guys are doing, in representing so many people we’re so grateful for your sacrifices,” he told the crew.

Niumatalolo and his family boarded Hokulea upon her arrival at the Annapolis Maritime Museum.

Niumatalolo is a Radford High School graduate and played for the University of Hawaii football team.

Hokulea departed last night and she will now stay in Virginia for about a month, taken out of the water in the next day or two and put into drydock for scheduled maintenance, before continuing on with malama honua, her voyage around the world in November.
