Hawaii Island Week: Kona Brewing Company

KHON2’s Wake Up 2day and Living808 present a special series from the Island of Hawaii. Trini Kaopuiki went exploring and found the joys of a staycation on Hawaii’s largest island.

Kona Brewing Company in Kailua-Kona was founded in 1994 by father-son duo Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa.

According to operations manager Sandi Shriver, they had a vision to capture the spirit of Hawaii with delicious local craft beers.

The current brewery makes about 11,000 barrels of beer annually, but its new location — just down the street from their landmark Kona Brewery and Pub — will be able to produce 100,000 barrels of beer.

Shriver adds that the new location will also be a high-efficiency brewery, which means it will incorporate new innovations in renewable energy and water conservation into the design. It is expected to open in early 2018.

Kona Brewing Company offers tours of its facility for just $5. They last approximately one hour and include a complimentary KBC gift and four 4 oz. beer samples.

Kona Brewing Company is located at 74-5612 Pawai Place. For reservations, call 808-334-2739 and request the Growler Shack (ext. 4215) or click here.
