Old Mamalahoa Highway is back open at Teshima Junction after a crash and utility pole damage triggered a nearly day-long closure.
According to the Hawaii Police Department, a vehicle hit and severely damaged a utility pole at around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. The crash prompted the vehicle to catch fire.
Police arrested the 24-year-old male driver on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital and treated for his injuries.
Both lanes of Old Mamalahoa Highway were initially shut down, then just the southbound lane, as crews repaired the pole.
The entire highway reopened shortly before 4 p.m.
