HONOLULU – Fans have the opportunity to enjoy great food, win auction items, and meet the newest members of the University of Hawai’i men’s basketball team at an event later this month. The UH Men’s Basketball Tipoff Event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 20 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
“We’re really excited to put on this event and make it an annual tradition,” head coach Eran Ganotsaid. “It gives the public a great chance to meet our team up-close and personal, while also providing much-need support for our student athletes. This really should be a fun night for our fans, our staff, and all our players and we’re all looking forward to it.”
The fundraiser starts at 5:30 p.m. with drinks and a silent auction. There’ll be an array of auction items, including travel packages, sports memorabilia and gift cards. Dinner and a program will follow with players and members of the coaching staff participating in a Q&A with emcee Scott Robbs from OCSports.
All proceeds from the evening will go to men’s basketball with an emphasis on the nutritional needs of the student-athletes. There will be additional opportunities for those in attendance to sponsor team meals throughout the season.
“We always stress to our players to take care of their bodies,” Ganot said. “Nutrition plays an incredibly important part in that and ultimately helps translate to success on the court. In today’s world of collegiate athletics, we need to stay ahead and the support from this event will help ensure that we do.”
Fans will be able to get their first peek of the 2016-17 edition of University of Hawai’i men’s basketball when the Rainbow Warriors hold their annual Green & White scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Stan Sheriff Center. The event begins at 1:00 p.m. and admission is free.
Arena gates open at noon as fans will have the chance to watch the team go through practice before a controlled scrimmage with multiple periods of varying lengths. Different lineup combinations will be on the floor as players will change teams throughout the afternoon.
There will be plenty of new players to check out on this year’s team, which began fall camp last Friday under second-year head coach Eran Ganot. A total of 10 newcomers join this year’s squad—five freshmen, four junior college transfers, and one Division I transfer. UH’s three returnees include sophomore Zach Buscher, Sheriff Drammeh, and Brocke Stepteau. Meanwhile, sophomore Jack Purchase, who redshirted as a transfer last year, will be ready to take the court this season. Returning senior Mike Thomas will redshirt this season.
Fans will ultimately enjoy an afternoon celebrating both the future and the past. Following the scrimmage, UH will also host an alumni game with more than a dozen former ‘Bows taking the court.
The Rainbow Warriors, fresh off a 28-6 season in which they won the Big West and advanced to the program fifth-ever NCAA Tournament, open the regular-season on Nov. 11 with the 52ndAnnual Outrigger Rainbow Classic.
