City council considers resolutions to support Honolulu’s rail project

A Honolulu City Council committee introduced two resolutions Wednesday aimed at helping Honolulu’s rail project.

One would urge the State Legislature to extend the general excise tax surcharge indefinitely. The other would support the completion of the rail project to Ala Moana Center.

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation says it still needs time to go over the proposed resolutions.

“I’m actually not saying we’re in support, because the board has not had an opportunity to take a policy position on the resolutions yet,” said Mike Formby, HART’s interim executive director and CEO. “Some of them were very specific as to initiatives, but we’re simply acknowledging that we support the council’s continued efforts to find the funding to support the project.”

HART says it’s still on course to deliver its updated financial plan by the end of the year.
