The New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships gets underway this week with a new format in the Division I bracket with league runner-ups hosting a first-round match at their home courts Monday, Oct. 24.
The tournament will continue with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, Oct. 27-28 at McKinley and Moanalua High Schools, then conclude on Oct. 29 at Blaisdell Arena.
Oahu Interscholastic Association champ and top seeded Kahuku is making its16th-straight appearance in the tournament – the longest-active streak among all teams. Other runs include Kamehameha (15), Moanalua (15), Kamehameha-Maui (14) and Mililani (10). Big Island Interscholastic Federation champ Hilo is making its first appearance since 2013.
The Division II bracket will keep its traditional four-day tournament format beginning Wednesday, Oct. 26 at Kaimuki High and St. Francis School. Defending state champ and top seeded Hawaii Baptist is making their fifth-straight appearance, ninth in 10 years, and have claimed four DII titles under head coach Myles Shioji. BIIF runner up Hawaii Prep is making its 11th-straight appearance.
Other active streaks in the D2 field include Konawaena (6), Hana (5) and Hawaii Baptist (5). On the opposite end, OIA champ Waianae is making their first appearance since 2006, while the ILH qualifiers Le Jardin and Damien are both making their second-ever appearances in as many years.
