It has been a little over a year since Kahuku first claimed the throne at the top spot in the Cover2/GEICO Division I Power Poll. Now, after winning 22-straight games against a Hawaii opponent, the Red Raiders (9-1) will look to continue their dominance in the OIA title game this weekend against No. 4 Farrington (8-2).
Both teams — as well as No. 5 Kapolei (8-2) and No. 7 Waianae (8-3) — will play on in the new Open Division State Tournament where they’ll battle it out with No. 2 Saint Louis (8-1) and No. 3 Punahou (7-2) from the ILH.
The Crusaders swapped spots with the Buffanblu after repeating as ILH D-I Champions in a 28-14 victory last Friday night.
The rest of the schools in the top 10 — No. 6 Baldwin (8-2), No. 8 Mililani (6-3), No. 9 Campbell (6-4), No. 10 Hilo (8-1) — will begin play in two weeks for the Division I State Championship. Joining them will be Leilehua (4-7), Waiakea (3-8), Iolani (3-7) and Moanalua (5-6).
Much like Kahuku in the D-I rankings, Konawaena began the season at the No. 1 spot in the Cover2/GEICO Division II Power Poll. After a loss in their second game of the season, the Wildcats (8-1) dropped to No. 2 but later reclaimed the top position after No. 2 Kapa’a (7-1) dropped a game to a winless Kauai (2-6) team.
After beating previously second-ranked Saint Francis (5-3) for the ILH D-II title last Friday night, Damien (6-2) moves up a spot to No. 3, knocking the Saints out of the top five.
Waipahu (8-1) moves up a spot to No. 4 while Waialua (6-2) and Lahainaluna (6-4) come in tied at the fifth spot. The Bulldogs are making their first appearance in the top five and will face the Marauders for the OIA D-II title.
This week’s rankings also marks the last Cover2 Power Poll until the end of the season. During the state tournament, each team’s seeding will determine their ranking.
