The Board of Directors of the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation – Maui Region announces that it has set July 1, 2017 as the date when Maui Health System, Kaiser Permanente, will assume responsibility for the operation of its three hospitals: Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital and Lanai Community Hospital.
Maui Region Board Chair Avery Chumbley said, “while our transition may be delayed, we have much to do in the interim. We will commit to a transition date of July 1, 2017. Kaiser has already started to assist with bringing on board key medical staff. Maui Region’s board, executives and staff as well as Kaiser’s leadership and medical staff are eager to make Maui’s hospitals stronger.”
Back in September, the board selected Dr. Barry Shitamoto as Interim Chief Executive Officer effective Nov. 1.
Ongoing negotiations between the state and the Hawaii Government Employees Association fell through also in September. Officials with the hospitals said they’ll do what they can to protect staff and patients, but may have to eliminate the number of beds and cut specialty services.
