Man injured in Maui house fire

Quick thinking on Maui may have prevented a propane barbecue grill explosion from being worse.

Maui fire crews were called just after 1:20 p.m. Saturday on Malina Place in Maui Meadows.

A 73-year-old man was on the lanai of his house when the grill exploded.

Maui fire says a tenant at the house got the man to safety then used a fire extinguisher to help slow the fire.

The homeowner suffered burns to his arms and face and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

The man’s wife was also home at the time but was not injured.

The fire was contained to the lanai area. The living areas of the home were not affected.

Damages are estimated at $70,000.

What caused the explosion is under investigation.
