Maui police report that a man died at the scene of a crash on Honoapiilani Highway Tuesday morning, about two miles north of Maalaea Bay Place.
At approximately 6:33 a.m., a black and red 1993 Honda Civic sedan traveling north crossed left of center and crashed into a red 2006 Toyota Highlander multi-purpose vehicle that was traveling in the southbound lane.
The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Samuel Gusman, 33, of Wailuku.
The Honda’s front-seat passenger and a rear-seat passenger were both transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
The operator of the Toyota sustained minor injuries and refused treatment.
A preliminary investigation revealed that all occupants of the Honda were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, compared to the driver of the Toyota, who was wearing his seat belt.
The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
The highway was shut down from Maalaea to Ukumehame until about 9:35 a.m.
This is Maui County’s 19th traffic fatality for 2016 as compared to 19 the same time last year.
