A California man died while swimming in waters off Ka‘aka‘aniu Beach, also known as Larsen’s Beach, in Kilauea Tuesday morning.
Police identified him as Jeff Yann, 73.
Bystanders called 911 at approximately 10:30 a.m. after two swimmers were swept out and appeared to be in distress.
When firefighters arrived, they found one swimmer had made it safely back to shore, but Yan was still in the water. A firefighter paddled out, brought him back to shore on a paddleboard, and began performing CPR.
Due to the beach’s remote location, rescuers utilized Air 1 to take him to awaiting medics, who then transported him to Mahelona Medical Center in Kapaa, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is pending. This is Kauai’s 11th drowning of 2016.
The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning for the County of Kauai, which will be in effect from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday.
