Drivers have a new way in and out of Alewa Heights.
A ceremony Wednesday marked the opening of the new Kuakini Street extension.
The road, which extends Kuakini Street from Lanakila Avenue to the existing roadway below Hala Drive, gives both vehicles and pedestrians a safe, well-lit route up and down the mountain.
Before the extension, drivers had to navigate two tight turns to access Keola Street, a narrow, residential road.
“A lot of credit for having this road constructed goes to the community, who for years and years and years demanded that the government do more to resolve this problem,” said Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell.
“It’s a long time coming and on behalf of the many residents who live in this area, we’re hugely grateful,” said Rep. Takashi Ohno, who represents Liliha, Alewa Heights, and Nuuanu.
The $2.4 million project was 80 percent federally funded and 20 percent city-funded through the Department of Transportation Services.
