Soldier killed in Oahu training accident identified

The U.S. Army confirmed Friday the identity of the soldier who was killed in a training accident on Oahu Thursday.

He was Sgt. Renardo Deshun Dukes, 26, of Pachuta, Mississippi.

Dukes was assigned to the 65th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.

A combat engineer, he enlisted in the Army in August 2010. Dukes previously served in Germany and Colorado, and moved to Schofield Barracks in December 2014.

He also deployed twice to Afghanistan in 2011 and 2013, serving a total of 20 months.

Dukes was one of 4,000 soldiers from 2nd Brigade currently participating in the Lightning Forge 2016 training exercise at various locations on the islands of Oahu and Hawaii.

Army authorities are currently investigating the incident.

Gov. David Ige released the following statement: “Our state and our nation mourn the death of a valuable member of Hawaii’s 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks. On behalf of the State of Hawaii, I extend my deepest condolences to the soldier’s family, those who served alongside that soldier and the leadership of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team. Please join me in honoring this soldier’s service and contributions to our community and our country.”
