Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell has taken an early lead with 71,448 votes to Charles Djou’s 60,107.
Those numbers are based on the first printout, which was released at around 7:50 p.m.
“We’re very, very happy,” said Georgette Deemer, Caldwell’s deputy managing director. “Although it is the first printout, we’re cautiously optimistic. … The mayor has his priorities and he’s wanted us to keep on track with those priorities throughout the entire administration.”
“We’re a little bit disappointed with those numbers,” said Sam Aiona, Djou’s campaign manager. “In Five months, we were able to amass this group of volunteers, an incredible group. They worked really hard, they were able to fight the establishment basically, and we’re proud of the work everyone has done here tonight.”
The next printout is expected to be released at 8:30 p.m.
