Rainbow Warrior basketball to open season Friday against SIU-Edwardsville

HONOLULUThe University of Hawai’i men’s basketball team tips off its 2016-17 campaign with the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic. UH opens the tournament against Southern Illinois Edwardsville out of the Missouri Valley Conference on Friday, Nov. 11. Tipoff is at 9 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center and will follow the Armed Forces Classic doubleheader earlier in the day.

Joining UH and SIUE in this year’s Classic field are Texas State and Florida Atlantic. The Rainbow Warriors will face Texas State on Sunday, Nov. 13, before taking on FAU on Monday night at 11:15 p.m. as part of the ESPN College Hoops Tip-off Marathon.

Coming off a historic 28-6 season in 2015-16, second-year head coach Eran Ganot will lead a brand-new squad with 10 newcomers and five new starters. The new Rainbow Warriors made their debut last week with a 97-73 win over BYU-Hawai’i on Nov. 3 and will now get their first taste of regular-season action.

Promotions: Outrigger Resorts is the tournament sponsor and will distribute 1,000 spirit flags each night. Also, Outrigger will award up to $2,000 each night during the popular “Shoot for Loot” halftime contest. Outrigger will award keiki and “tween” prize bags at each UH game and will have temporary tattoos for keiki as well. The team will unveil the latest addition in the rafters for last season’s NCAA Tournament 2nd round appearance during pre-game on Friday. Outrigger will distribute 400 special edition tournament posters after Sunday’s game at the men’s basketball team autograph session. Friday’s game is a “Green Out”, Sunday is a “White Out”, and Monday’s late night contest is a “Black Out” and fans are asked to wear UH-branded green, white, and black attire at each respective game.

Rainbow Classic Notables: The Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic enters its 52nd year of competition and seventh year as a four-team, round-robin tournament…the Classic was traditionally an eight-team, championship bracket tournament played during the Christmas season…UH is 85-64 (.570) all-time in the Classic (four wins vacated in 2012 and ’13 due to an ineligible player)…UH has won the tournament on 14 occasions and the ‘Bows have played in the winner-take-all final game of the Classic in each of the last four years…UH captured last year’s championship with a thrilling 76-75 nationally televised win over Nevada as Roderick Bobbitt‘s driving layup with 1.4 seconds left proved to be the game winner…this will be the first Rainbow Classic appearances for SIUE, Texas State, and Florida Atlantic.

Other Notables:  The ‘Bows are undefeated in their last seven season-openers with the games being decided by an average margin of 19.2 ppg…UH’s last loss in a season opener was vs. San Francisco (70-75) in 2008…UH will make its ninth straight appearance on ESPN’s College Hoops Tipoff Marathon when it faces Florida Atlantic on Monday, Nov. 14 at 11:15 p.m…UH has been part of the event since its inception in 2008 and hold a 5-3 mark in the late-evening tilts.
