A 70-year-old Kansas woman died while swimming in waters off Poipu Beach Wednesday afternoon.
Police have identified her as Janice Klayson.
Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. Klayson was reported to be swimming roughly 30 feet from shore when she was discovered face down in the water. Bystanders brought her to shore and were performing CPR when rescuers arrived on scene. She was taken to Wilcox Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is pending. This would be Kauai’s 12th drowning this year.
A high surf warning is in effect for north- and west-facing shores of Kauai, Niihau, and Molokai, and north-facing shores of Oahu and Maui, until 6 a.m. Friday. Officials anticipate wave heights of up to 25 feet in some areas.
Beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water and away from the shoreline.
