A moped rider was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday afternoon following a crash in Downtown Honolulu.
Police say the incident between a Ford truck and a moped happened a little before 2 p.m. at the intersection of South Beretania Street and Fort Street Mall.
A witness and police have confirmed that the 65-year-old male moped rider, who was traveling westbound, suddenly moved into the truck’s lane, which was operated by a 28-year-old woman.
“I was driving behind this blue truck right here in the first lane, and an older gentlemen in a moped cut right in front of the blue truck, and got hit and went flying about five feet,” said witness Sean Young.
Police confirmed the moped rider was then ejected into the roadway and then hospitalized in critical condition. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of accident.
The two left lanes of Beretania were also closed for nearly three hours as police investigated.
Young adds that the passengers in the truck were in a panic following the accident.
“They were kind of frantic and stopped and got out of the car. The passenger was a lady and was really hysterical and she started crying,” Young described.
Police say speed was not a factor in the collision, but it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were.
