A middle school is warning parents after a student was approached and followed by a stranger.

According to a letter from Wahiawa Middle School, the girl was riding a city bus to school when a man she didn’t know started asking her questions.

She got off the bus, and the man followed her for several blocks.

According to the school, the student’s parent later called police to report the incident.

School officials are urging parents to discuss stranger danger safety with their children and offer the following tips:

  • Stay away from strangers. Do not talk or take anything from them.
  • Don’t go anywhere with someone you don’t know. Never accept a ride from a stranger.
  • Stay more than an arm’s reach from strangers. Seek help immediately from a trusted adult if a stranger approaches you.
  • Use the buddy system; avoid walking anywhere alone.
  • If a stranger grabs you, do whatever it takes to stop the stranger, including yelling for help.
  • Report any suspicious activity to a trusted adult.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and let others know where you will be and what time you will be back.
