The half-hour special “Hokule’a: The First Voyage, Sailing Into History” will air on KHON2 at 9:30pm Tuesday night, November 22.  It commemorates and looks back on Hokule’a’s first voyage to Tahiti and back in 1976.  Hokule’a was Hawaii’s first deep-sea voyaging canoe in more than 600 years – our voyaging tradition and non-instrument navigation had long been forgotten.  The special is told by those who were there, the men who dared to build a voyaging canoe (some laughed at them), wanted to disprove theories that Polynesians drifted here by accident, wanted to prove that Polynesians (Hawaiians) were skilled voyagers and non-instrument navigators who could purposefully settle these islands, and wanted to help in cultural revival. This morning, Nainoa Thompson and Kathy Muneno joined Living808 with a preview of the special.
