An 18-year-old woman survived a 150-foot fall from an illegal hiking trail on Kauai Tuesday.
The hiker was an exchange student visiting from Oahu.
Officials say she fell at around 12:25 p.m. Tuesday while hiking an unestablished trail near Wailua Falls.
Initially, first responders were unable to find the woman in the forest reserve. They met up with a man who had contacted authorities after seeing the woman fall. All walked down the trail and found the woman on the Lihue side of the river.
Crews airlifted her to a nearby landing zone. She was taken to Wilcox Memorial Center with minor scrapes and abrasions.
Police closed a portion of Ma‘alo Road between mile marker three and the end of the road for approximately one hour to support the rescue operation.
