Call it a win for the little guy.

On Saturday, many small business owners were offering an extra discount to encourage shoppers to ditch the major retailers and “shop small.”

Back in 2010, American Express started Small Business Saturday.

On Oahu, several small businesses were offering deals like ten to 15 percent off this special Saturday, and shoppers told us they rather invest their money back into our community.

At the newly opened South Shore Market in Ward Village, Amy Wong of Big Bad Wolf has been pleased with sales so far.

“This year has just been so amazing, just the two weeks that we have been open here,” she said. “It’s a lot different and we are trying to focus on what we can do to drive sales like this during the holidays.”

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, more that 95 million Americans spent a combined $16.2 billion on Small Business Saturday last year.

“I think some customers really notice that 10 percent is really a lot,” said Emily Davidson, employee with Lanikai Bath and Body, “and small businesses can give a little and we get a lot back.”
