Sewage spill reported on Kuhio Highway in Kauai

Wastewater officials responded to a sewage spill that occurred on Kuhio Highway in Hanama‘ulu Saturday morning.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) personnel were repairing a downed utility pole on the roadway near the Kapaia Road junction when they noticed an overflowing manhole and notified the county.

The Department of Public Works Wastewater Division reports that the overflow was caused by a partially-blocked sewer line that crosses Hanama‘ulu Stream along the highway. Wastewater crews were able to clear the blocked pipe at around 1 p.m. and left the scene by 2 p.m.

Officials estimate that approximately 3,200 gallons of sewage overflowed and runoff from this area flows into the stream.

The Department of Health has been notified and signs have been posted along Hanama‘ulu Stream. The public is advised to stay out of the water until the signs are removed.

The sewage spill occurred in the same area as the downed utility line but the incidents are unrelated. KIUC personnel remain at the scene as they complete repairs to the power line, but they reopened the westbound lane of Kuhio Highway once the wastewater crew left the scene.

Kuhio Highway near Kapaia Road is now open to one lane of alternating traffic. Motorists are advised to proceed with caution and expect delays.
