Maui police have arrested the suspected driver in a hit-and-run on Piilani Highway that killed a 16-year-old girl.
The crash occurred on Sunday, Nov. 27, at approximately 8:50 p.m. on Piilani Highway at the intersection of Uwapo Road.
Police say a vehicle traveling on Kaiwahine Street hit Hannah Simmons, who was in a marked crosswalk, as it made a left turn onto Piilani Highway.
The vehicle involved fled the area. Simmons was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition where she died.
On Monday, Dec. 5, at approximately 2:17 p.m., Charles Tyler Hardy, 20, of Kihei was arrested at his home on suspicion of accidents involving serious bodily injury or death, and negligent homicide in the second degree. He was released pending further investigation.
The suspected vehicle involved, a blue 2007 Ford F-250 pickup truck, was seized as evidence.
The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
