The attorney general’s office says a working group has come up with a timeline to whittle down a backlog of untested rape kits.

The plan is to test as many as 50 kits each month starting next year.

There are nearly 2,000 untested kits across the state. According to the attorney general, about 1,375 of them are on Oahu though HPD says it’s since reduced that number to under 1,200.

A report provided to the state Legislature Thursday also says police departments are compiling databases to help keep track of the kits and any records of testing. HPD’s database shows untested kits from as far back as 1993.

“We will be using this information to better understand the issues that resulted in some kits being untested, and to ensure that all kits that should be tested are tested,” said attorney general Doug Chin.

Keep in mind, some of the kits are blank or empty or don’t have any evidence of value to a case, but are still counted as being untested.
