A 26-year-old woman is in police custody in connection with a pedestrian crash in Waimanalo Monday night.
It happened at around 7 p.m. on Kalanianaole Highway and Wailea Street, near the 7-Eleven.
Police say a family of four was in a marked crosswalk. The truck hit the mother, a 3-year-old boy, and a 6-month-old boy.
The 6-month-old was hospitalized in critical condition and the 3-year-old was hospitalized in serious condition. According to Emergency Medical Services, both suffered head injuries.
The mother was in good condition and the father was not hurt.
Officers searched for the alleged driver, Annie Akau, who police said fled the scene before emergency crews arrived.
“She was in the car with, it looks like another child. She got out of the car with the child and she’s seen running away from the scene on foot,” said Lt. Carlene Lau, Honolulu Police Department.
Akau was arrested at 11:30 p.m. at her Waimanalo home and booked on 10 counts, including negligent injury, accident involving death or substantial injury, operating a vehicle under the influence, endangering the welfare of a minor, and driving without a license.
Justin Bannigan lives nearby. “I was in my room in the back here and we heard the crash and thump,” he said. “We came out, father was holding the 3-year-old, screaming the baby wasn’t breathing. Somebody else had the infant.”
Police aren’t sure if the truck was speeding at the time, but say alcohol may be a factor in the crash.
Officers also arrested a man at the scene who they say is Akau’s husband. He was booked for hindering prosecution.
