Hawaii’s voyaging canoe Hokulea has ended its nine-month journey up and down the east coast, having arrived in Miami, Florida, early December.
While there, the crew will undergo a change, and in about three weeks Hokulea will return to the Caribbean before heading through the Panama Canal, on the way back home.
Many people across the globe are following her voyage around the world, including a woman at a retirement home in Nuuanu, who got the surprise of her life from a Hokulea captain.
Nainoa Thompson had heard about Charlotte Matsuda at the 15 Craigside Retirement Residence.
She says she loves Hokulea so much that she makes Hokulea models of all sizes as gifts.
She also choreographed a hula to the song “Wa’a Hokule’a,” which she and Hula Halau o na Hoaloha were going to perform at the residence’s holiday show.
But she didn’t know a Hokulea captain and navigator would be there to watch her perform.
