Water concerns in Hana prompts county to offer emergency source

Maui County is working to resolve water issues in Hana.

Last week, the county’s Department of Water Supply experienced pumping issues at a well, which created low water pressure in the area.

One Hana resident KHON2 spoke to on Sunday said he found out about the water situation on Facebook.

“We didn’t know there was a problem,” said Ed Hill. “We just got a notice a couple of days ago and just made arrangements that our bottles were completely filled with drinking water. It doesn’t affect showering or doing laundry or anything else like that.”

The utility transitioned to an emergency water source Monday, which raised concerns over whether the water was safe to drink.

Those concerns prompted Hana High and Elementary School to close Monday, though classes will resume as normal Tuesday.

The department says the well was disinfected over the weekend, and tested to ensure it is clean and clear of E. coli bacteria. Results showed there were no issues with water quality, officials said.

The emergency source will supply customers in the Wakiu, Wainapanapa and Uakea Road areas, plus Hana Medical Center, with drinking water for up to six months as the original well undergoes repairs.

Once that well is back up and running, the utility says both will serve as permanent sources of water.

Customers are advised to keep informed on the quality of their drinking water by contacting the Dept. of Water Supply, Water Quality Laboratory, at 270-7550. Leave a message with call-back information.

For more information, contact the department’s 24-hour service line at 270-7633 if a water-related problem occurs or there are any questions.
