WALNUT CREEK, Ca. (KRON) — Interstate 680 was briefly shut down Monday morning due to a runaway horse and mule on the freeway in Walnut Creek, California.
They were reported on the loose at around 7:38 a.m. PST on northbound I-680 at Castle Crest Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Authorities rounded the both of them up and the lanes were reopened to traffic by 8:30 a.m.
Steve Burdo with Contra Costa County Animal Services says the animals broke through a fence about a mile away. He says the horse, a gelding named Striker, appears to have led the breakout. Hank the mule, on the other hand, is more of a follower according to Burdo.
The pair even adhered to the vehicle code and used an on-ramp to enter the highway.
