Nimitz Highway near Kalihi Street reopened following night of repairs to damaged pole

Nimitz Highway near Kalihi Street has reopened Friday morning in both directions near Kalihi Street after Hawaiian Electric spent the night repairing a damaged pole.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation says the ZipperLane is now open for the morning commute.

Nimitz Highway westbound was closed for majority of the evening, but reopened some time before 5 a.m.

Police initially shut down the highway Thursday in both directions between Waiakamilo Road and Mokauea Street following a crash that damaged a pole near Kalihi Street.

Kalihi Street remains closed in both directions between Nimitz Highway and Hart Street.

The damage triggered a brief power outage that affected 2,645 homes and businesses, but the utility says all power was restored within a half-hour.
