Food safety inspectors will begin stepping up enforcement of a new law that bans the use of latex gloves in restaurants.
The ban took effect at the beginning of the year. After giving restaurants some time to get used to it, it will now become part of food safety inspections.
Violators could face fines of up to $10,000 but it won’t affect a restaurant’s placard status.
Roughly three million people in the United States are allergic to latex. People can also become allergic to latex through constant exposure.
As for alternatives to latex, there are different types of gloves that can be used.
“There are actually quite a variety of synthetic gloves that one can wear depending on the situation,” Dr. Kevin Dawson said.
