Semi truck fire prompted freeway lane closures, traffic gridlock

A container on a semi truck caught fire on the H-1 Freeway in Kalihi Friday night.

The fire happened on the freeway near the Gulick Avenue overpass, prompting Honolulu police to close all but one lane of traffic.

Eastbound traffic was backed up past Fort Shafter on Moanalua Freeway as well as on the viaduct.

The fire was extinguished before 10 p.m., but lanes were still closed since the fire broke out before 9 p.m.

Huge flames and black smoke engulfed the back of the container which was pulled over to the side in a video submitted by a viewer.

The cause of the fire was not known at the time of this post.
