Kirk Matthews is a veteran news reporter with more than 40 years of experience at radio and television stations in Oregon and Hawaii. “I have always had an interest in the public good and that led to an interest in journalism,” he said.
In 1969, Matthews graduated from Oregon College of Education — now Western Oregon University — with a B.S. in General Studies, which means “I know a little bit about a lot of things.”
Matthews says his favorite part of the job is keeping the public informed, whether it’s during an earthquake, tsunami, hurricane or election.
When he’s not working, Matthews enjoys reading, playing golf and the guitar, and visiting with his daughters, mother and sister on the mainland.
He and his wife, Linda Coble, a long-time fixture in Hawaii radio and television, are active in community affairs and have a deep commitment to Hawaii’s youth.
Both are also avid golfers, though Matthews admits he struggles to keep up. “Her blonde logic says, ‘We’re not playing to get better, we’re playing to keep from getting worse.’”
