Sam Spangler doesn’t just cover athletes. He used to be one himself.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa graduate was a pitcher in the Minnesota Twins organization from 2010-2011 after being selected twice in the Major League Baseball draft.

“Sports is the highest level of drama. Unscripted and improvised, the storylines are like no other,” he said. “Once I finished my playing career as an athlete, I wanted to be involved with sports as much as I could. Now I enjoy covering games and athletes more than I did playing.”

One of Spangler’s most memorable experiences at KHON2 is covering the 2012 Hawaii High School Athletic Association football state championship. “The pride shown in the communities of Kahuku and Punahou, as well as the respect displayed between the two, was awe-inspiring,” he said.

The Interdisciplinary Studies major and former OC Sports color analyst is also active in his off-time.

“I enjoy going on hikes and exploring all of the outdoor beauty Hawaii has to offer.”
